Rescue: Mt Chocorua, Piper Trail
On Saturday afternoon, July 11, LRSAR responded alongside NH Fish & Game to assist a 65-year-old male hiker who sustained a leg injury on the Piper Trail near the summit of Mt. Chocorua.
This call came just 11 hours after the completion of LRSAR's previous mission, with several LRSAR volunteers and NH Fish & Game Conservation Officers responding to both incidents.
LRSAR was requested at 12:56 p.m., and team members were at the trailhead by 1:50 p.m.
A team of 22 LRSAR volunteers and 2 NH Fish & Game Conservation Officers hiked in with a litter, reaching the patient at 4:05 p.m. Medical care was provided, including splinting the injured leg. After the litter arrived, the patient was packaged for transport, and enough team members had assembled to begin the carryout at 4:59 p.m.
The team completed a 3.5-mile litter carry, with the litter wheel added once the terrain allowed. The patient and full team reached the trailhead at 7:54 p.m. The patient was transferred to a personal vehicle, and his hiking partner transported him for further medical evaluation and treatment. Following a debrief, all team members cleared the scene by 8:05 p.m.
Thank you to all of the LRSAR volunteers and NH Fish & Game Conservation Officers for another successful mission. We wish the patient a full and speedy recovery.
