Rescue: Whitehorse Ledge

On Monday, July 20, at 4:16 PM, Lakes Region Search and Rescue was requested by New Hampshire Fish & Game to assist North Conway Fire & Rescue with a hiker in distress on Whitehorse Ledge Loop Trail (Bryce Path). The mission concluded with an all clear at 7:30 PM.

The incident involved a group of four hikers, most visiting from New Jersey, who chose the Whitehorse Ledge Loop after seeing it listed as “Moderate” on the popular AllTrails app. By the time they requested assistance, the group had been on the trail for nearly five hours.

After reaching the party, rescuers evaluated the group and provided rehydration and time to recover. Once everyone was feeling better, three of the four hikers required physical assistance descending Bryce Path between Whitehorse and Cathedral Ledge before the group was safely escorted back to the trailhead.

This incident is a good reminder that trail ratings don’t always translate well between regions. A hike considered moderate in the White Mountains can feel challenging—or even advanced—to hikers accustomed to less rugged terrain. Before heading out, consider more than just the rating. Look closely at:

• Total distance

• Elevation gain

• Weather conditions

• Trail surface and technical difficulty

• Your group’s experience and fitness level

The White Mountains are beautiful, but they’re also unforgiving. Planning for the terrain—not just the mileage—can make the difference between a memorable hike and a call for help.
